Smarter than Einstein

I admit it sounds a little 'legendary', but I sure do hope it is true. Billy Graham once spoke of it. Does that help? I'm referring to that delightful story about Einstein riding the train back to his residence from Princeton. It was his very first day of classes at Princeton; he had just moved into a brand new residence, and it was his very first ride back to it.

That day on the train, while the conductor came down the aisle, punching tickets, Dr. Einstein was frantically searching for his. He searched through his coat pocket, checked his vest pocket, opened his briefcase—where was that ticket?

The conductor saw him doing all this and felt sorry for him. "Dr. Einstein, don't worry about it. I know who you are. I'm sure you bought a ticket."

Dr. Einstein nodded appreciatively and the conductor continued on down the aisle. But as he got ready to move on to the next car, he glanced back and there was the great physicist, now down on one knee, searching the floor under his seat!

The conductor rushed back to him and said, "Dr. Einstein! Please! Don't worry! You don't need a ticket. We all know who you are. I'm sure you would never get on without buying one."

Dr. Einstein looked up at the man and, with a deep sigh, replied: "Young man, I too know who I am. But what I don't know is where I am going. And if I don't find that ticket, I won't know where to get off."

I love it! Apparently—no, shockingly!—this man with the wonderful mind had been so preoccupied with the Universe and the nature of all its movements that he boarded the train that very first morning without paying the slightest attention to where he really lived!

Delightful! And if it is just 'legend', well there's plenty of Truth to it anyway.

You know? It never ceases to shock me how some of the greatest minds on earth don't know where they're going!

I'll never forget my wonderful philosophy professor: prestigious "Chair" of the Philosophy Department, Masters Degrees and PhD's under his belt, and all the world's literature and philosophy at his beck-and-call, basically telling me one night in a pub that he didn't know where he was going! Didn't have a clue where human existence was really heading!

Really! It shocked me! That was my very first encounter with the sheer bankruptcy of this world and all its glorious systems and philosophies.

What about you? Do you know where you're going?

Do you mind if I ask: how do you know? What makes you so sure? Well, because I know God. Oh, but all the world's religions claim to know "God" of one sort or another.  So...once again: How do you know?

Listen dear family: you are living in an era where assurance of salvation is under assault like never before! Just this past decade we have seen the Best-Seller lists topped by such works as The End of Faith (Sam Harris), God is Not Great (Christopher Hitchins), The God Delusion (Richard Dawkins).

But you don't need the best-seller list to expose this assault on the Christian Faith. You will hear it at the office, in the lecture hall; from your friends and around the table at family gatherings. This is the age of faith under siege! And the ultimate target is your assurance!

So how can you be sure? How can you really know?

Oh, that wonderful First Epistle of John! The entire thing is written so that you may have assurance! Is that what you need today? Then go to that Epistle, dear ones. The words "know" and "knowing" show up 21 times in that Epistle. The phrase "this is how we know" is repeated eight times, and—oh!—what blessed assurance it brings!

Do you know where you're going? Here's a little test to help you settle that very question...

θ Have you given your life to Jesus Christ?  "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." 1 Jn 5: 13  This is the very first step! This great assurance belongs only to those who believe in Him! But there's more help for assurance...

θ  Do you obey His commands? "We know that we have come to know Him if we obey His commands." 1 Jn 2: 3

θ  Are you becoming more like Him? "This is how we know that we are in Him: if we walk as Jesus walked." Jn 2: 5-6

θ Do you love one another? "For we know that we have passed from death into life because we love our brothers."  1 Jn 3: 14

And isn't this a beautiful one...

θ Have you found peace from condemnation? "This is how we know that we belong to the Truth, when we set our hearts at rest in His presence, whenever our hearts condemn us." 1 Jn 3: 19  And finallly...

θ  Do you let the Spirit of God lead the way? "We know that we live in Him, because He has given us His Spirit." 1 Jn 4:13

Oh yes! You certainly can know that you have eternal life! In fact, you're supposed to know it! The entire message of this Bible, dear ones, has been written for just that purpose!

Think of it, dear ones! Though all the world may fail to do so, you can know where you're going! And, unless I'm mistaken, doesn't that make you smarter than Einstein?

See you Sunday!                      RAS
